A Medical Scribe is essentially a personal assistant to the physician; performing documentation in the EHR, gathering information for the patient's visit, and partnering with the physician to deliver the pinnacle of efficient patient care.
Traditionally, these professionals assist doctors during patient visits and simultaneously record all information in EHRs. They raise queries in the EHRs so doctors can track the patient's progress and decide the further course of treatment. In some scenarios, the medical scribe may also schedule appointments and procure lab reports for the doctor to analyse and interpret.

There are a few pre-requisites to becoming a medical scribe. First, a medical scribe must be high school graduate. For some employers, it is preferable for a medical scribe to have a work background, some college courses or a degree in science: particularly in biology or pre-medicine. This will give the new scribe a leg up as they train for a new career as they will be more familiar with much of the terminology. Since many medical scribes go on to become physicians themselves, the training and clinical experience as a medical scribe can prove invaluable.
